Mobility trains flexibility AND strength – stretching alone is not enough

Mobility training at WD Space

Mobility is not a side issue – it decides how you move in 20 years

For many people, mobility training sounds like “a bit of stretching to warm up”. It is not – at least not with us. Mobility is essentially an investment in your future self – in whether you can still tie your shoes without trouble at 60, or get up from the floor on your own at 75 without thinking about it.

Mobility is more than stretching

Mobility, not just flexibility

Stretching improves passive flexibility – how far a muscle can be stretched when you are not moving. Mobility is something different: the ability to move a joint actively and under control through its full range of motion. Anyone who only stretches trains only half of the equation – without strength and control, extra flexibility achieves little and can even make joints less stable. At WD Space we combine both: we release tension and at the same time build the stability that makes your new mobility usable in everyday life.

Understanding the cause

Why your body feels stiff

Mobility is lost when we don't use it. Anyone who sits a lot, rarely uses the full range of motion of their joints and always moves in the same few patterns in everyday life becomes noticeably stiffer over the years – usually so gradually that you only notice when you can no longer do something that used to be completely natural.

Our approach

What mobility training means in practice at our studio

We work specifically on the areas that stiffen up first in most people – hips, shoulders, thoracic spine. Not with hours of passive stretching on a mat, but with active movements that address strength and mobility at the same time. Many of our clients originally come to us for strength or endurance goals and only notice during training how restricted their mobility actually is – for example in deep squats or when lifting overhead. That is why mobility with us is not an isolated extra, but usually an integral part of the overall plan.

A quick self-test: sit cross-legged on the floor and try to stand up again without using your hands. Does that feel strangely hard or unsteady? Then targeted mobility training is probably more valuable to you than you have thought.

Frequently asked questions about mobility training with a personal trainer

Stretching improves passive flexibility – how far a muscle can be stretched. Mobility training goes further: it trains the ability to move a joint actively and under control through its full range of motion. Mobility combines flexibility with strength and control, which usually makes it the more effective choice.

Two to three short, targeted sessions per week are enough for noticeable improvements. For lasting results, three to four sessions per week are recommended, combined with active breaks in everyday life.

Around 98 percent of all movement limitations result from lack of exercise and one-sided loading, not from injuries. Sitting for long periods is the biggest risk factor – hips, thoracic spine and shoulders gradually lose mobility.

You can work simple exercises into your daily routine on your own. With limited mobility, though, it is easy to train the wrong thing – for example stretching when stability is actually what is missing. A personal trainer recognises the difference and makes sure your training really works.

Mobility training suits anyone with limited mobility in daily life or sport – from the office worker with stiff hips to the strength athlete who wants to get deeper into the squat. It complements every other training at WD Space.

Many people feel more ease in everyday movements after just a few sessions. Visible improvements in mobility usually appear after four to six weeks of regular training.

Frequently asked questions about knee and shoulder pain

Can mobility training help with knee pain?

For many everyday knee pains, the cause is not in the knee itself but in restricted mobility and strength in the hip, ankle and surrounding muscles. Targeted, individually tailored training can often bring noticeable relief here. With acute pain, after an injury or with known structural problems (e.g. meniscus damage, cruciate ligament), talk to your doctor beforehand – that is no substitute for personal training.

What helps with shoulder pain from office work?

Tense shoulders pulled forward from sitting at a screen for long periods can often be improved by targeted mobilisation of the thoracic spine and strengthening of the shoulder blade muscles. With severe pain, pain that radiates or pain that appeared suddenly, the same applies here: get it checked by a doctor first, before you start targeted training.
